The new facility, which will cost approximately $17.5 million and span 27,000 square feet, is designed to enhance the quality of life for Garland’s senior residents by offering expanded spaces for programs, wellness services, and social activities. Features of the center will include exercise rooms, a game room, a walking track, an arts and crafts room with a kiln, a library with computers, wellness consultation areas, and outdoor recreational spaces.

City Manager Judson Rex opened the ceremony by highlighting the project’s significance, stating, “Today is more than just the start of a construction project; it’s a celebration of community, progress, and a shared commitment to our senior residents.” He emphasized that this groundbreaking represents one of the last major projects from the 2019 bond program, a testament to the progress the city has made on implementing the voter-approved programs.

Mayor Dylan Hedrick also shared his enthusiasm for the new center, noting, “This location is one of those stories where we initially planned just to renovate the existing building, but it became clear that the existing structure simply wasn’t fit for modern use. It needed a completely fresh start.” He expressed gratitude to the senior community for their patience during the transitional period and highlighted the importance of the new facility as a “shining example of what we can achieve together.”

District 2 Councilmember Kris Beard provided additional details about the center’s features, explaining, “The courtyard has a direct view of downtown from Sixth Street and Avenue A. The center was truly woven into the fabric of Garland.” She emphasized that the design was carefully crafted with seniors in mind, ensuring accessibility and comfort.

As plans move forward, the community looks forward to the day when they can gather again to cut the ribbon and officially welcome residents to this valuable resource. The groundbreaking of the Garland Senior Activity Center marks not only a new beginning for local seniors but also a promising investment in the future of the community.
