National Mental Health Trends Mirror What Room for Change Is Seeing in North Texas

Garland, TX — The latest Annual Trends Report from Crisis Text Line paints a sobering picture of America’s mental health. In 2025, more than 1.5 million crisis conversations took place—the highest volume in the organization’s history. Anxiety, relationship stress, and suicide remained among the most common reasons people reached out for help, with suicide becoming the most discussed issue among texters under the age of 18.

The national findings are reflected in Texas as well. Since the launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline in 2022, Texas crisis centers have handled more than 380,000 calls and texts, giving Texas the second-highest 988 call volume in the nation—a clear indication that demand for mental health support continues to grow.

For clinicians at Room for Change, these findings are not surprising.

“These numbers validate what therapists across North Texas have been witnessing every day,” said Amanda Esquivel, founder of Room for Change. “When you see more than 380,000 Texans reaching out to the 988 Lifeline, it tells us something important. People are asking for help. That’s encouraging. But it also tells us that emotional distress is touching nearly every community—including our own here in North Texas. We have to make it easier for people to access care before they reach a crisis.”

Young people remain especially vulnerable. According to the latest Texas Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 21.1% of Texas high school students reported seriously considering suicide, 18.3%

“The statistics represent real people,” Esquivel said. “They’re our neighbors, our coworkers, our students, our parents, and our friends. Mental health isn’t someone else’s issue anymore. It’s something every workplace, every school, every healthcare provider, and every family should be talking about.”

Many people seek help only when emotional distress has become overwhelming. Mental health professionals say earlier intervention often leads to better outcomes and can prevent crises from escalating.

Room for Change encourages individuals to view counseling the same way they view routine medical care—not as a last resort, but as an investment in overall health and well-being.

“As a community, we have an opportunity to change the conversation,” Esquivel added. “Seeking help is a sign of self-awareness and strength. Every conversation about mental health makes it a little easier for someone else to ask for support.
