Senior Advisory Committee Meeting Featured Fire Extinguisher PASS Method Demonstration

Garland, TX – During the recent Senior Advisory Committee meeting, committee members received an education on fire safety through a practical demonstration by Jerry Click, who manages Public Education for the Garland Fire Department. Click emphasized the importance of knowing how to use a fire extinguisher effectively, revealing that “approximately 80% of people do not feel confident using a fire extinguisher in an emergency situation.”

To enhance the learning experience, Click utilized a fire simulator and a practice extinguisher during his presentation. The fire simulator, designed to mimic real fire scenarios safely, allowed the room to visualize the behavior of flames and the effectiveness of extinguishing techniques. Click explained, “Seeing a simulated fire helps you understand how a fire behaves and what you need to do when faced with a real emergency.”

He demonstrated the steps involved in the PASS method, a standard technique for operating a fire extinguisher, which can help individuals respond to fire emergencies with greater assurance:

  1. Pull the Pin: “The first step is to pull the safety pin located at the top of the extinguisher,” Click explained. This pin prevents accidental discharge and must be removed before use.
  2. Aim Low: Click advised attendees to aim the nozzle at the base of the fire. “It’s crucial to target the base of the flames rather than the fire itself,” he noted. This approach is more effective in extinguishing the fire.
  3. Squeeze the Lever: “Next, squeeze the lever slowly and evenly,” Click instructed. He emphasized the importance of a controlled release, as squeezing too quickly can lead to a sudden discharge of the extinguishing agent.
  4. Sweep from Side to Side: Finally, Click demonstrated how to sweep the nozzle from side to side, covering the area of the fire. “Continue this motion until the fire is completely out,” he added, reinforcing the need for thoroughness.

After the demonstration, attendees were invited to practice using the training extinguisher on the simulator, allowing them to apply the PASS method in a controlled environment. “Hands-on practice is essential for building confidence,” Click stated. “The more familiar you become with the process, the better prepared you’ll be in an emergency.”

In addition to the PASS method, Click provided several other valuable fire safety tips. He stressed the importance of regularly checking smoke detectors and ensuring they are installed in appropriate locations, such as inside each bedroom and on every level of the home. Click also advised that when using a fire extinguisher, individuals should use it completely, and if the fire does not go out, they should leave it to the fire department. “You’re going to keep your back to the door. Never let anything in between you and the exit,” added Click to point out the importance of also considering what to do should the fire extinguisher not be enough to stop a fire.

The meeting provided valuable insights into fire safety, with Click encouraging the community to practice these techniques regularly to reinforce their confidence.
