Garland, TX – Local author Vishnu Warrier is on a mission to make chess accessible and enjoyable for children through his innovative book series, AlphaBetChess. With a rich background as a USCF Candidate Chess Master and over 20 years of competitive experience, Vishnu combines his passion for the game with his love for storytelling to ignite young minds. Most recently, his books were featured at the Garland Library’s Local Author Showcase during Curiosity Fest, where he had the opportunity to present the series.

A Journey into Chess
Vishnu’s journey with chess began at an early age, competing for the first time at just nine years old. His love for the game remained steadfast over the years, leading him to co-found the North Texas Chess Academy, now known as the Texas Chess Center. In 2022, he published The Chess Bible: The Most Instructive Tips, Acxiom’s, One-Liners & Mantras, which quickly became a bestseller at Thinkers Publishing.
The inspiration for his latest venture, AlphaBetChess, came when Vishnu was reading to his young son. “I noticed I was reading the same types of a-b-c stories over and over from different authors,” he shared in our recent interview. “I thought my head, wait a second, why can’t I do it [with chess]?”
Building the Series
Vishnu’s dedication to enriching children’s lives through chess education is evident in the structure of the AlphaBetChess series. Volume one introduces 26 chess terms from A to Z, and it’s illustrated to keep young readers engaged. The second volume expands on this by including coloring and tracing activities, perfect for younger children who may not yet be ready for a full chess lesson. Excitingly, Volume 3 is set to release on November 25, 2025, incorporating a rhyming component that adds a whimsical touch to learning chess terms.
A Vision for the Future
As Vishnu prepares for the launch of the third volume, he envisions a total of 14 books in the AlphaBetChess series. The series is expected to evolve as children grow, introducing more complex chess strategies and concepts over time. This approach not only teaches chess but also nurtures critical thinking and strategic planning skills in young learners.
In addition to his books, Vishnu is developing a course aimed at parents and guardians, providing them with tools to teach chess at home. “The goal is to create a training program that empowers parents to confidently introduce chess to their children,” he shared.
The Impact of Chess
Vishnu believes that chess can have a profound impact on children’s cognitive development. Learning chess can foster skills like patience, focus, and strategic thinking. He has noticed a resurgence of interest in chess recently, especially following the success of the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit and the impact of the pandemic, where families stayed home and turned to games for entertainment.
As a father of a four-year-old who is already showing promise as a young chess player, Vishnu is committed to sharing his passion for the game with the next generation. His son, who is already competing in chess tournaments, is a testament to Vishnu’s passion for introducing young children to the game.
