Garland, TX – The Garland Police Department has recently announced its plans to intensify its Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) patrols now through January 1. This stepped-up enforcement aims to mitigate the risks associated with impaired driving, which continues to pose a significant threat across Texas.
Impaired driving remains a pervasive issue, with the department sharing a staggering statistic on Facebook, pointing out that the state saw over 1,100 fatalities reported in alcohol-related crashes statewide in 2023 alone. In an effort to combat this alarming figure, officers will be deployed during nighttime hours, utilizing both marked and unmarked patrol units to deter DWI offenses and protect all road users.
What should you do if an unmarked police car tries to pull you over?
If an unmarked car is attempting to pull you over, stay calm, turn on hazards, and drive slowly to a well-lit, populated area like a gas station while calling 911 to verify the stop with dispatch; don’t stop immediately in an isolated spot, keep doors locked, real officers understand safety concerns.
The Garland Police Department warns that the consequences of a first-time DWI conviction can be severe, including fines up to $2,000, potential jail time of up to 180 days, and a driver’s license suspension for up to one year. Additionally, the hidden costs related to a DWI arrest can exceed $17,000.
To further promote safety, the department encourages residents and visitors to plan ahead for a sober ride home, designate a sober driver before celebrating, and consider rideshare, taxi services, or public transit if they choose to drink. This initiative is funded through a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Impaired Driving Mobilization Grant, which specifically targets DWI and Driving Under the Influence of Minors in an effort to reduce impaired driving incidents. The community’s cooperation in adhering to these guidelines will be crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday season for everyone.
