Garland ISD Breaks Ground on Multi-Program Activity Centers

Garland, TX – The Garland Independent School District (GISD) marked a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of a new Multi-Program Activity Center (MAC) outside Williams Stadium. This project is part of the voter-approved 2023 Bond, which includes multi-program activity centers at all high school campuses.

Voters largely understood that investments in school facilities can have a far-reaching impact. A study published in 2023 analyzed data from over 15,000 school bond ballot referenda across 28 states, concluding that while improvements in basic infrastructure, such as HVAC systems, significantly boost student test scores, investments in athletic facilities tend to increase local property values too. Moreover, in low-wealth districts, like Garland, where 69.9% of our students are economically disadvantaged, facility upgrades can lead to statistically significant increases in test scores, equivalent to closing 10 percent of the academic achievement gap between high-income and low-income districts.

These centers are part of a larger initiative aimed at improving educational facilities across the district. The ceremony was attended by district leadership, students, and community members who gathered to mark the beginning of this transformative project. During the event, GISD Superintendent Dr. Ricardo Lopez highlighted the importance of this investment, stating, “These facilities are not just buildings; they represent our commitment to our students, families, and neighborhoods. A promise to provide safe, modern, and inspiring spaces for learning and growth.”

In addition to the groundbreaking at Williams Stadium, two more MAC groundbreaking ceremonies are scheduled for this Friday. The first will take place at 9 a.m. at Rowlett High School, followed by a second ceremony at 1 p.m. at Sachse High School. These new centers will serve as hubs for not only athletic activities but also arts and community events, fostering a spirit of collaboration and engagement within the community.

The MACs are designed to be more than just athletic complexes; they will also cater to fine arts and special education, providing versatile spaces that meet the diverse needs of all students. With a focus on creating facilities that match the excellence of the GISD, these upcoming MACs are poised to redefine the educational landscape in Garland. The next few years will see continued investment in school infrastructure, ensuring that every student has access to quality facilities that support their growth and learning.
