Women’s Equality Day 2025 Celebrated in Dallas with Garland’s Councilmember Dutton

Dallas, TX – The League of Women Voters of Dallas hosted a powerful Women’s Equality Day event today, drawing more than a hundred dedicated community leaders and elected officials from across Dallas County to commemorate the 19th Amendment’s anniversary. The event, themed “Promises Yet to Keep,” focused on the ongoing fight for gender equality and the need for collective action.

The program featured proclamations presented by Dallas City Councilwoman Gay Donnell Willis and by Dallas County Commissioner Dr. Theresa Daniel. The theme “Promises Yet to Keep” echoes in the proclamations and throughout the program as speakers shared insights about the existing disparities for women.

Elaine Campbell, a prominent advocate for women’s rights and the VP of Voter Services at the League of Dallas, shared insights on some of the history surrounding voting rights and the importance of inclusive democratic participation. She emphasized the need for ongoing advocacy to ensure voting accessibility in underserved areas.

Following Campbell, Avalyn Pace, a leader with extensive experience at the United Nations Association of the United States of America, spoke passionately about equality and the impact of global initiatives. She presented some eye-opening data, including the fact that in recent years, the United States has slipped in international women’s rights ratings.

An inspiring speech on empowerment came from Garland City Councilmember Carissa Dutton. Dutton, known for her commitment to community service, shared her journey and the initiatives she has led in Garland, against the odds. Her speech focused on the future, as she articulated a vision of empowerment and engagement for women and the community. Watch her full speech here.

As the program concluded, attendees left feeling inspired and motivated to carry forward the mission of equality, embodying the spirit of this year’s theme: Promises Yet to Keep.
