Public Invited to “An Evening with Moths” on July 19

Garland, TX – The Preservation Society for the Spring Creek Forest invites the community to experience the wonders of the night during “An Evening with Moths” on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 9 p.m. This family-friendly event, held at 1770 Holford Drive, celebrates International Moth Week and offers a unique opportunity for attendees to explore the nocturnal world of moths and other night-flying insects.

Participants will gather at the Preserve to observe moths drawn to light sheets set up around the area. Volunteers will assist with moth identification and answer questions, while Sam Kieschnick, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Urban Wildlife Biologist for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, will be present to share his expertise and enthusiasm for these fascinating creatures.

Moths play an important role in our ecosystems, serving as pollinators, food sources for various animals, and indicators of environmental health. This event aims to raise awareness about their importance. Families are encouraged to actively engage by using the iNaturalist app to document observations throughout the evening.

Important details for attendees include:

  • Safety First: All children must be accompanied by an adequate number of adults. Family and scout groups are encouraged to stay together during the event.
  • What to Bring: Visitors are advised to bring water, flashlights, and insect repellent. It is also recommended to wear close-toed shoes for safety.
  • Parking: Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged to ensure everyone can join in the fun.

The Preservation Society for the Spring Creek Forest hopes the public will take advantage of this opportunity to connect with nature and celebrate the vital role moths play in our environment. Mark your calendars for a night of discovery and appreciation of these often-overlooked insects.
