The foundation was established following the tragic story of Lieutenant Chris Carker, who was battling cancer for the second time. As his fellow officers came together to provide financial support while he was out of sick leave, Carker went into remission but sadly passed away later. The officers decided to use the leftover funds to create a foundation that would continue to assist their colleagues in need.
The foundation has raised over $60,000 in 2024, providing assistance to 14 families facing financial challenges due to medical issues. As healthcare costs continue to rise, the foundation is focused on increasing its fundraising efforts to meet the growing demand for assistance. The support provided is not only financial; it also includes partnerships with mental health professionals and legal advisors to ensure comprehensive care for officers and their families.
Blassingame emphasized the importance of confidentiality in their support process, stating, “Only one board member has to know the details of the case, allowing us to maintain privacy while providing necessary assistance.” This approach has been crucial in building trust and encouraging officers to seek help without fear of stigma.
