Garland, TX – The Garland Police Department has a Residential Lockbox Program aimed at improving emergency response times for senior residents. This innovative program is designed to provide quick access to individuals aged 65 and older who live alone or are regularly left alone, ensuring they receive timely assistance during medical or other emergencies.
The Residential Lockbox Program addresses two significant concerns: the safety of senior residents and the potential damage to property that can occur when first responders are forced to gain entry into a home. By allowing emergency personnel to access a participant’s home without breaking down doors or windows, the program not only protects residents but also preserves their property.
Eligibility Criteria
The program is open to all Garland residents who meet specific eligibility requirements:
- Individuals aged 65 and above.
- Residents under 65 with a major medical condition that could lead to incapacitation or unconsciousness.
How the Program Works
Interested participants can obtain a Lockbox Program Application from the front desk of the Garland Police Department or from any Neighborhood Police Officer. Once the application is completed, it can be submitted in person at the Police Department or handed directly to a Neighborhood Police Officer.
After the application is approved, a Neighborhood Police Officer will contact the participant to explain the program further. During this visit, the participant will provide a spare house key, which the officer will securely place inside the lockbox. The officer will also set a combination for the lockbox and determine the best location for it—ensuring quick access for emergency responders while keeping it discreet from public view.
The lockbox will be utilized solely in emergency situations when responders are unable to enter without force. At no other time will it be accessed without proper authorization. Participation in the Lockbox Program is free, aside from the cost of providing a spare key.
If participants choose to withdraw from the program, they can easily do so by contacting the Neighborhood Police Officer Unit. After the key is returned, the lockbox will be removed from the residence.
Important Note
It is important to note that the program does not extend to apartment complexes, as eligibility is limited to single-family residences. For those living in apartments, you may contact your landlord for a spare key.
The Residential Lockbox Program is sponsored by the Garland Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association, reflecting the community’s commitment to enhancing the safety and well-being of its senior residents.
