Proven dyslexia advocate, literacy leader, and father brings real-world experience and results-driven vision to the SBOE.
Garland, TX – Stephen Yearout, a devoted father, nationally recognized dyslexia advocate, and one of Texas’ most trusted voices on reading science and educational equality, today announced his campaign for the Texas State Board of Education, District 9.
As a dyslexic adult and the father of two dyslexic sons who are now thriving college students at Tarleton State University, Stephen has spent more than a decade turning personal challenge into statewide impact. Through his organization, Empower Dyslexia and the widely followed Empower Dyslexia Show, he has equipped thousands of families, educators, and policymakers with the tools and knowledge needed to help every child learn to read successfully. “Too many Texas children are still being left behind because schools aren’t consistently using the evidence-based practices we know work,” Yearout said. “I’ve lived this fight as a parent and led it as an advocate. Now I’m running for the State Board of Education to make sure every classroom in Texas has the high-quality, science-aligned curriculum and support our kids deserve.”
Stephen has testified before the Texas Legislature, collaborated with school districts across the state, and guided countless families through the special education process. Teachers and parents turn to him not just for research, but for practical, classroom-ready solutions that deliver results.
His creative outreach extends to the youngest learners through his beloved Mr. Owl children’s book series, which instills a love of reading while modeling calm problem-solving and truly inclusive classrooms where every child is seen and supported.
If elected, Stephen Yearout will fight for:
- Evidence-based reading instruction in every Texas classroom
- Vetted, high-quality instructional materials that leave no child behind
- Transparent, accountable leadership that puts families and students first
- Dyslexia and literacy programs designed and delivered for every learner
“Stephen isn’t just talking about change—he’s already made it happen, one child, one family, and one classroom at a time,” said Amy Yearout, Stephen’s wife and partner in raising three sons, two of whom are dyslexic. “Texas students need a proven advocate on the State Board of Education. Stephen is ready to serve.”
Texas families deserve leadership that understands both the science of reading and the real-life struggles of students who learn differently. Stephen Yearout has walked that path, and he’s ready to lead.
