Plant Figs and Pomegranates Now for a Sweet Harvest Later

Rowlett, TX – Fall may feel like the end of the growing season, but for gardeners in North Texas, it’s the beginning of something better. When the air cools but the soil stays warm, new plants focus all their energy below ground building roots that will fuel next year’s growth. That’s why fall is the perfect time to plant figs and pomegranates, two of the easiest and most rewarding fruiting plants you can grow here.

Figs: Sweet Rewards with Minimal Fuss

Figs thrive in our North Texas climate, asking for little more than full sun and well-draining soil. Once established, they’re remarkably heat and drought-tolerant, producing their lush, honeyed fruit through much of summer. Varieties like Celeste, Texas Everbearing and Brown Turkey are customer favorites for their flavor and reliability.

Planting figs in fall gives their root systems time to develop before summer’s heat returns. Add a two-inch mulch layer, water deeply and consistently through winter, and you’ll be rewarded with vigorous growth and fruit sooner than you might expect.

Pomegranates: Beauty and Bounty

Few fruiting plants are as ornamental or as tough as pomegranates. Their glossy leaves, orange blossoms, and glowing fruit add color and charm to any landscape. They’re naturally pest-resistant and drought-tolerant, and their fruit has been prized for centuries for both flavor and health benefits.

In fall, pomegranates appreciate the same conditions as figs: good drainage, plenty of sun, and time to root in before the coldest nights arrive. A local favorite is Wonderful, which combines rich flavor with outstanding ornamental appeal.

Why Fall Matters

When you plant in fall, your trees can focus on root development instead of battling heat and evaporation. By the time spring arrives, they’re already settled and ready to grow — which means earlier harvests, stronger plants, and less maintenance.

So while others may be packing up their garden tools, you can be planting the promise of next year’s harvest.  Plant now for a sweeter, stronger tomorrow.
