Balch Springs, TX – The library at the heart of Balch Springs is about to bloom… literally. Rooted Futures Collective and Friends of the Balch Springs Library are proud to announce the launch of the “Future Ancestors” Library Garden & Learning Center project, a major expansion of the existing Hope Community Garden, transforming the library grounds into a vibrant, hands-on educational space.Â
This project will transform the library grounds into a dynamic outdoor classroom and community space where residents of all ages can explore native plants, pollinator habitats, edible landscapes, and interactive learning stations. The project aims to extend the library’s mission beyond its walls… demonstrating how public spaces can educate, nurture, and empower communities while restoring local ecosystems. The expansion allows the library grounds to serve not just as a place for books, but as a space for experiential learning, ecological stewardship, and community connection.
“I believe the most important public space in our city is the library,” said Jess Reaka, project lead and founder of Rooted Futures Collective. “By expanding the Hope Community Garden, we’re giving our community a chance to grow knowledge, skills, and pride alongside the plants… and leave a legacy for future generations.”
Friends of the Balch Springs Library are partnering to ensure the garden reflects the community’s needs and aspirations, which is central to the project. Residents are invited to:
