Garland, TX – In a heartwarming display of community spirit and leadership, Sharonda Green, recently recognized as the 2025 Entrepreneur of the Year by the NAACP Garland Unit, embraced an unexpected opportunity to showcase the essence of leadership through the eyes of a child. During her time as Principal for a Day at Annie Keeley Elementary, a student asked if her cherished stuffed pony, Haya, could accompany Green on her adventures.
Initially hesitant about the responsibility of keeping Haya’s beloved stuffed pony safe, Green quickly recognized the importance of the request. The young student insisted that Haya was ready for the adventure, and thus began a memorable day that showcased the leaders in action within the Garland community.
Haya’s journey started in downtown Garland, where she enjoyed the vibrant fall decorations adorning the Main Street Cafe and received a newly bejeweled harness made custom by Leslie Horton Montena at Epiphany Gallery. The stuffed pony took in the sights and sounds of the bustling area, setting the tone for an exciting adventure ahead.

The explorations continued at Good Samaritans of Garland, where Haya had the chance to meet Sara Kenefake and Ryan Winters. This visit highlighted the importance of community service and the role local organizations play in supporting residents.

Throughout the day, Haya also had the unique opportunity to meet several influential figures from the Garland community. From shaking hands with members of the Garland City Council to meeting Texas State Representative Angie Chen Button and Texas House Representative Rhetta Bowers, Haya was truly immersed in Garland’s leadership landscape.

Green and Haya’s journey didn’t stop there. They were welcomed by Garland City Manager Judson Rex, Chief Communications Officer Tiffany Veno, and Cultural Arts Director Amy Rosenthal, who recently received the 2025 Bridge Builder honor from the NAACP Garland Unit. Their meeting underscored the collaborative spirit present within the city’s leadership.

The adventure continued as Haya met the board of trustees and several members of the district leadership for Garland ISD, as well as Dr. Ricardo Lopez of Garland ISD. Even Garland Police Chief Jeff Bryan joined the day’s festivities, further emphasizing the connection between community leaders and the citizens they serve.

The day culminated in a special moment when Haya attended the 34th Annual Freedom Fund Brunch alongside Green, where Sharonda accepted her award for 2025 Entrepreneur of the Year. Surrounded by her family, who had come in from Chicago to celebrate, Haya witnessed firsthand the impact of leadership and community involvement.

Inspired by Haya’s enthusiasm and her quest to showcase leadership in action, Green plans to highlight more leaders in the community in future endeavors. “It’s important for our students to see role models and understand the value of community engagement,” Green shared.
Stay tuned as Sharonda Green continues to inspire the next generation of leaders in Garland, proving that even a stuffed pony can embark on an adventure filled with lessons in leadership and community spirit.
