Garland, TX – The Joseph Thomas Foundation is dedicated to assisting medically fragile children by providing critical resources and services when Medicaid and other sources fall short. With a mission to outshine medical disabilities, the foundation aims to offer hope, relief, and compassion to families facing overwhelming challenges.

In a recent interview with Perry Covington, the Executive Director of the Joseph Thomas Foundation, he shared insights into the foundation’s impactful work across the region and beyond. “The foundation was started 18 years ago with our primary financial assistance program, which helps families obtain the medical equipment their children need,” Covington explained. “Often, this is equipment that Medicaid or other insurance plans will not cover.”
Covington recounted a touching story about an 11-year-old boy who needed a glass eye. “His last glass eye was provided when he was five, but as he grew, the eye became too small and his eye socket began to cave in. If we hadn’t stepped in to help, he would have faced significant health complications,” Covington said. “We were able to cover the cost of the new glass eye, ensuring he could continue to lead a normal life.”
This is just one of many examples of how the foundation has made a difference. Covington also mentioned a young girl who required specialized seating equipment to participate in school activities. “Her family was struggling to afford the necessary chair, which was essential for her to engage with her peers in the classroom,” he shared. “By providing that chair, we helped her not just physically, but emotionally as well, allowing her to be part of her school community.”
The foundation’s work extends beyond financial assistance; it also connects families with local resources and provides guidance on navigating the healthcare system, offering emotional support to those in need.
Covington stressed the importance of community support in sustaining the foundation’s efforts, particularly now when healthcare costs and insurance denials are on the rise. “Every contribution counts and helps us make a difference in the lives of these children,” he remarked. “We rely heavily on donations and partnerships to continue our mission.”
The foundation also has a network of medical supply closets, which they aim to expand and help more people find the equipment they need. All of the supplies are donated, and in some cases, refurbished. They took on this endeavour after realizing that some second-hand stores, such as Goodwill, would not accept medical equipment and would instead crush these supplies. To reduce waste and help get supplies into the hands of those who need them, the foundation has stepped in to serve as that resource.
Looking ahead, the Joseph Thomas Foundation plans to expand its outreach efforts through fundraising events and community engagement initiatives. Covington expressed a desire to raise awareness about the challenges faced by medically fragile children and to encourage more people to get involved.
As the foundation continues to provide vital support to families in need, it remains committed to fostering an environment of hope and compassion. For more information about the Joseph Thomas Foundation or to learn how you can help, visit their website.
