Garland Fire Department to Host Blood Drive

GARLAND, TX – The Garland Fire Department is calling on the community to help address critical blood shortages by participating in an upcoming blood drive on June 17. The drive will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carter Bloodcare Bus, located at the Fire Administration building at 1500 Highway 66, Garland, TX 77040.

Every donor will receive a free beach towel as a token of appreciation for their contribution. This event is particularly crucial, as the Texas blood supply is facing significant shortages, especially for Type O blood.

The Importance of Blood Donation

Blood transfusions are vital in many medical situations. In the U.S., an estimated 4.5 million people require blood transfusions annually, with childbirth complications accounting for blood transfusions in 1 in 83 deliveries. Daily, approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells, 5,000 units of platelets, and 6,500 units of plasma are needed to meet patient needs.

Preparing for Your Donation

To ensure a smooth donation experience, there are a few things you can do:

  • Eat a hearty meal: Focus on high-protein foods and stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
  • Take it slow after donating: Sit, rest, and enjoy some snacks provided post-donation to help your circulation recalibrate.
  • Plan for downtime: It’s recommended to take it easy for a couple of hours after donating.

Your participation in this blood drive supports local healthcare needs and helps save lives in critical situations. Join the Garland Fire Department in making a difference in our community on June 17.
