Brandenburg Middle School Earns Second National Merit School of Distinction Award

Garland, TX – Brandenburg Middle School has been recognized as a National Merit School of Distinction for the second consecutive year by Magnet Schools of America (MSA). Garland ISD proudly shared about the honor and what it means for the community.

Principal Randy King expressed pride in the achievement, stating to GISD Communications, “Receiving this recognition two years in a row sets Brandenburg Middle School apart. It isn’t a fluke or a coincidence. What we are building at Brandenburg is intentional, and this honor validates the work happening every day on our campus.”

The Classical Center at Brandenburg challenges students to excel across various domains, blending classical art history with hands-on creative experiences to foster critical thinking, creativity, and discipline. King noted, “I am extremely proud of our students, staff, and community. Being the only GISD campus and one of the few in Texas to earn this distinction speaks to the commitment across our campus.”

The school’s motto, “Be Bold, Be Brave, Every Student, Every Day,” encapsulates its focus on collaboration and resilience. King indicated that the Classical Center aims to set a high standard for middle school excellence in academics and arts, offering a diverse range of courses, including band, choir, art, theatre, piano, gymnastics, and dance.

“We are an A-rated campus with strong academics and a top athletic program in GISD,” King added. “That combination has led to strong interest in our program and a growing waitlist.” As a campus-wide magnet school, Brandenburg allows all students to participate in its specialized programs, regardless of magnet status. “Magnet schools are vital because they give students a place to belong and a place to grow their talents,” King added. “That’s what we do at Brandenburg, and we are just getting started.”

The National Merit School of Distinction designation is granted to magnet programs that demonstrate academic achievement, promote diversity, deliver an integrated curriculum, and maintain strong partnerships with families and the community. Schools must undergo a rigorous application and review process conducted by a national panel of educators.

Magnet Schools of America will recognize this year’s award recipients during its 2026 National Conference in April.
